Editor’s Note:

I have said this many times that writing is one of the best things in the world, whether its writing a blog or writing a short story or a book once something is written it is bound to be read by at least someone and what we write has an impact on that person. While I was writing this article the terrible terrible tragedy happened in Paris now I’m sure you know about it but we here at Geekmyday wanted to give out our thoughts, condolences and well wishes to people in France who are having to deal with a lot of problems right now.

“Whoever kills an innocent person it is as if he has killed all of humanity” Quran 5:32

When such a tragedy occurs we need to show the terrorists that even though we are from different countries, race and cultures all our hearts beat as one and we need to show them that humanity is still alive in the world. People in France are doing everything they can to help out the people who were affected but we people who can’t physically help them should help them in the way that’s possible. The International Federation of Red Cross team is physically helping the people who were affected and through them we can help too. If you are someone who wants to help visit www.ifrc.org right now and make a donation even a little donation can go into rebuilding someone’s life.

On the topic of donating let’s not forget that similar tragedies occur in our own country and countless innocent families have to pay the price so again let me remind you to donate as much as possible just whenever you see that donation box put some amount in it even if it’s a little amount it can really go into rebuilding someone’s home and their future. Recently October was cancer awareness month and its always a good time to make someone’s life better so head over to www.shaukatkhanum.org.pk/how-to-help.html and if you are someone who this has an impact on make a donation.

Huawei Y6 Unboxing and First Impressions

If two years ago someone would have told me that you will be excited for a Huawei device, I wouldn’t have believed them but now it’s true. Recently Huawei has put out some really high quality phones and I have to say I’m quite impressed with what Huawei has produced they are really pushing the quality of how a midrange device should be while keeping the price point fairly low. Such is a thing they have done again with the new Huawei Y6 smartphone which I will be unboxing here and giving my first impressions of the device.

The Box

The device comes in this compact, cherry red colored box which actually looks pretty good in my opinion there’s nothing flashy about the box it’s just a simple red box with Huawei written on the sides and Huawei Y6 written on the top side.

Opening the box, we get the star of the show the Y6 nicely wrapped in a plastic bag. After taking it out when I first held the device I couldn’t really believe how solid it felt. Really it feels so good in the hand that if you show it to someone they won’t believe that this is a midrange device I have to give props to Huawei for making a solid feeling device. Alongside the device you will also get a pretty standard 1.0A charging adopter, a data cable, a 2200 mAh battery and a quick start guide.

The Phone

For a phone which only costs 14,900 rupees (152 $) Huawei did some excellent work especially I have to say in the build quality and the display of the phone. The Y6 is rocking a 5-inch 720p HD Display with a pixel density of 294 ppi and it’s a pretty good display the colors are nice and saturated, it’s a great panel and it doesn’t feel cheap actually you can say this about the whole device that it doesn’t feel cheap it actually feels quite premium. That’s a great feat when you consider the price of the Y6.

The shape of the phone reminds of me the Samsung Galaxy S2 and that’s not a bad thing the S2 was a great phone for its time and this is a nice call back to that. On the topic of the body of the phone its entirely made of plastic but it has a nice brushed metallic look and feel to it which really brings the build quality to a whole new level I would say. There’s a usb charging port on the bottom with two speaker grills, power and volume button on the right side and a headphone jack on the top. The left side of the phone is completely empty.

Coming back to the front side of the device the display when powered off is completely black it’s not one of those displays which have a greyish tint to them that makes the whole display panel look a little out of place so I’m glad that’s not here. If you look closely the top and the bottom bezel has a nice texture on it. I love it when manufactures take their time and design these little details on the phone.

I powered on the device and as far as first impressions go Huawei’s skinned Android lollipop looks really clean, beautiful in fact, a word which I haven’t used to describe a skin in a long time. I’m generally not a fan of skinned Android but here it’s a welcomed addition. If I have to choose a device with either Samsung’s Touchwiz, HTC’s Sense or Huawei’s EMUI I would choose Huawei’s EMUI because its refreshingly good with minimal bloatware.

Under the hood the Huawei Y6 has pretty modest specifications a Quad-core Snapdragon 210 processor clocked in at 1.1 GHz, 1GB of RAM 8GB of Internal memory with expandable storage through SD cards and on top of that it has duel sim support.  I will be going into much more detail about the operating system and the performance in the full review.

The Verdict

The Huawei Y6 has surprisingly made a really great impression on me I wasn’t expecting the build quality and the display quality to be this good. A 720p display under 15,000 rupees is a ridiculously good deal and it would be really hard to pass up this device for someone who is considering buying this. Again I have to give props to Huawei this is a wonderful device for the price point and this is a great step forward in bringing high quality phones in a relatively low price especially in Pakistan’s emerging market.
